Old Kuttawa

As we returned from Nashville yesterday afternoon (doctor's appointment), we stopped by our favorite marina on Lake Barkley not too far from our house to take in the fall scenery.

Here is what we saw as we drove around Old Kuttawa, a small community of old Victorians right on the lake. (Kuttawa is a Shawnee Indian word that means "beautiful.") This community is gorgeous in all seasons and I would love to live there, but the houses are way out of our price range.

Click on pictures for a close-up view.

A secluded house nestled on a back street amongst the trees

An old church that was refurbished and turned into a private residence, on the corner overlooking the marina

View of the swimming area (on right) from the side of the street where the houses face the water and marina

Looking down the street (houses on right and water on right)

A gnarled, twisted tree growing up through the roof of this abandoned house

The late afternoon sun shining through the trees

Canada Geese enjoying a late-afternoon swim

Awesome view of the trees of Old Kuttawa

Can you see why I want to live here? We have been coming to this marina for over 37 years and it never fails to amaze me. The scenery, the houses, the marina, the water, the sky, the wildlife, the walking trails, the boats, the fishing -- who wouldn't want to live in this area?

What a glorious ending to a beautiful, peaceful day

In the bottom photo above the dark road you see in the lake leads nowhere. The old cities Eddyville and Kuttawa are now underwater.

I have lots of good memories of going to Kuttawa as a child. I used to love going to the marina. I am glad you guys had such a good day. The fall colors are really beautiful this year.

Looks like a beautiful city in which to retire! Too bad it's so pricey! I like the idea of walking trails near that beautiful marina!
The trees reflected in the water are so gorgeous...

Hi Mother Kitty,
I'm a friend of your daughter from way back at MSU... :)
I used to live in Kuttawa, thanks for the trip "home"! :) I used to swim there and sit out and watch meteor showers there on that little beach.
Those are really nice pictures, I'm glad you had a fun day!

I bet you could afford that cute little fixer-upper with the adorable tree thru the roof! That would give you and hubby something to do with all your free retired time!

Glad you got out and enjoyed the beautiful day, even if it included going to the doctor!

It looks like you enjoyed a lovely day. How relaxing. It's nice to keep the area as a treasure to visit. Sometimes the grass is greener....
You have a beautiful home and yard, you've worked so hard over the years to make it what it is.
The fall colors are sure beautiful, we don't have too much of that. It's easy to see why people want to visit New England to see the fall colors but they don't have anything on Kentucky.

Wow...what a lovely place to retire to. I even like the name. Maybe when long-haird daddy becomes the next b.gates with his business, he & alipurr will buy you that dream house of yours, by the lake.

Or maybe your sister-in-law will win the lottery and buy it for you. We can dream can't we.

I'm glad you had such an enjoyable time going to the doctor and by your comments it sounds like you could have stopped by to visit some bloggers on your way home too.

I love the picture of the tree's reflection in the lake, but I like all your pictures. I love it when you share pictures of what you see around you.

Motherkitty, I didn't realise you were such a wonderful photographer! (Now there's a new interest for you to pursue, perhaps?) These photos are beautiful. The abandoned house with the tree growing through it is amazing.

It's good to be home, and to be able to read your blog again :)
